More than two decades after Halo: Combat Evolved helped redefine console first-person shooters, Halo Studios is returning to where the series began with Halo Campaign Evolved, a full remake built using Unreal Engine 5.

Scheduled to launch on July 28, 2026, the remake will bring the classic campaign to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Rather than simply improving textures or increasing resolution, Halo Studios is rebuilding the original campaign with updated visuals, redesigned systems, new story content, and modern co-op features.

The project aims to preserve the identity of the 2001 classic while adapting it for a new generation of players.

Halo Campaign Evolved Is a Complete Remake of Halo: Combat Evolved

The biggest difference between Halo Campaign Evolved and previous versions of Halo: Combat Evolved is the scale of the project.

This is not another remaster. Halo Studios is rebuilding the campaign from the ground up, replacing the original technology with a modern engine and recreating the experience for current hardware.

The original Halo: Combat Evolved launched in 2001 and became a defining title for the Xbox brand. It introduced players to Master Chief, the mysterious Halo ring, and humanity’s war against the Covenant.

For the remake, familiar locations, characters, animations, and cinematics have been recreated with modern production values while keeping the original campaign structure intact.

Unreal Engine 5 Brings Halo CE Into the Modern Era

The transition to Unreal Engine 5 is one of the most significant changes coming to Halo Campaign Evolved.

The original game was designed around the limitations of early 2000s console hardware. The remake uses modern rendering technology to rebuild environments with greater detail, improved lighting, and updated visual effects.

Confirmed visual improvements include:

  • Rebuilt environments
  • Higher-quality textures
  • Updated lighting systems
  • Improved animations
  • Enhanced visual effects
  • More cinematic presentation

During previews, Halo Studios showcased redesigned versions of classic missions including The Silent Cartographer and Assault on the Control Room, giving players a first look at how familiar areas have been transformed.

Early impressions have been largely positive regarding the visual upgrade, although some previews also reported technical issues such as occasional performance problems and Unreal Engine 5-related visual artifacts. These issues were observed in preview builds and may change before the final release.

Three New Missions Expand the Original Campaign

One of the biggest additions in Halo Campaign Evolved is the inclusion of three brand-new prequel missions.

The additional chapters focus on Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson, expanding the events surrounding the original Halo story. Instead of replacing the existing campaign, the new missions are designed to add more context to the characters and events players already know.

For longtime Halo players who have experienced the original campaign multiple times, these missions provide a new reason to return to Installation 04.

Gameplay Changes Modernize the Classic Halo Experience

While Halo Campaign Evolved keeps the foundation of the original campaign, Halo Studios is introducing several gameplay updates.

The remake adds modern features including:

  • Sprint movement
  • Enemy weapon usage
  • Expanded vehicle interactions
  • Vehicle hijacking
  • Energy Sword combat
  • Updated combat systems

These changes bring the game closer to modern shooters while still allowing players to experience the classic Halo formula.

According to preview information, sprint can be disabled, giving players the option to choose between a modern movement system and a more traditional Halo experience.

Halo Campaign Evolved Adds Co-op Features Across Platforms

Cooperative gameplay is another major focus of the remake.

Halo Campaign Evolved will include:

  • Two-player local split-screen co-op
  • Four-player online co-op
  • Cross-play support
  • Cross-progression

The remake does not include traditional PvP multiplayer. Instead, Halo Studios is focusing on expanding the campaign experience and making the story playable with friends across different platforms.

This approach keeps the attention on the part of Halo that started the franchise: its campaign.

Halo Campaign Evolved Brings a Classic Back for a New Generation

Halo Campaign Evolved is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious updates to the original Halo experience.

By combining the campaign that started the franchise with Unreal Engine 5 visuals, new missions, expanded co-op options, and updated gameplay systems, Halo Studios is attempting to recreate a classic while keeping its original identity intact.

The remake launches on July 28, 2026, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. With a new generation of players preparing to experience the beginning of Master Chief’s journey, Halo Campaign Evolved could become one of the most important releases in the franchise’s modern history.
